About Limmu coffee

What makes Limmu coffee special

Limmu is one of Ethiopia's best-known washed coffee origins. It grows in the Limmu area of Jimma Zone, in the green, rainy highlands of south-west Ethiopia, close to the forests where Arabica coffee first grew wild. High altitude, deep red soil and cool nights let the cherry ripen slowly, which builds sweetness and a clear, lively acidity.

Washed Limmu is known for its balance: floral aromas, citrus and stone fruit, a sweet finish and a clean, light-to-medium body. Roasters use it as a single origin and as the bright heart of espresso and filter blends.

How we process our Limmu

  • Only ripe red cherry is hand-picked on our estate and by our outgrowers.
  • Cherry is floated and sorted, then pulped the same day at our washing station.
  • Parchment is fermented and washed in clean channels fed by the Gulifa creek.
  • It dries slowly on raised African beds, turned by hand, to export moisture.
  • It is then hulled, screen-graded and hand-sorted for export, and inspected by ECTA.
